Sandwich Making

Also known as MLEA, this important component of Stellar focuses on scaffolding the writing process for each child. First, the pupils are provided with the experience. For example, a sandwich making demo was arranged.

The teacher modelled the sandwich making.



A follow-up writing called the Class Dictated Writing was completed. The teacher writes out the story together with the pupils. She guides them and elicits responses from her pupils. She recalls the vocabulary and scaffolds the language for them.

Pupils are then given the opportunity to do their group writing.

After this enriching experience, pupils move on to their own individual writing.

In weeks 9 and 10, all the Primary 1 pupils were given the opportunity to listen to an online story. They went to the computer lab for this NHSB lesson.

After listening to the story, they were required to answer 3 simple questions.

Stellar Activities in Term 1

The P2 pupils did the Modified Language Experience Approach (MLEA) on Unit 2: Chicken Rice. We call the MLEA activity the "Smelling Experience". Pupils got to smell three different types of food packaging. Then, the pupils were to guess the name of each food. They wrote as a class for the class writing activity on the experienced they had for the day. Here are some shots taken during the activity:

Combining P1 and P3 Stellar activiites

Coincidentally, the P1 and P3 Stellar theme this week is on animals. The P3s had created books on animals for their MLEA. They were thus invited by Mrs Tay to read their works to the P1C students. The younger pupils were very enthusiastic and welcomed their older schoolmates warmly. The P3s were even requested to read the stories again as the P1s liked the stories so much. Self-directed learning took place as the P1s wanted to learn more about the animals and the P3s (who had done much research on their topics) were able to answer them.

P1 STELLAR Listening Posts

The P1 classes have commenced their listening posts activities. The children definitely enjoyed themselves. We teachers believe that the children are going to learn more effectively and enjoy learning all the more.

The last STELLAR unit for term 3... Pupils made their own hand puppets for role play and had great fun =D Glad to see the children enjoying themselves so much =)
